Component 1: Hardware Cost

OpenClaw needs a machine to run on. You have four options, each with different cost profiles:

Option A: Your Existing Computer ($0)

If you have a desktop or laptop that stays on and connected to the internet, you can run OpenClaw on it at no additional hardware cost. The downside is that your agent goes offline when you shut down, restart, or take your laptop somewhere. This works for testing, but most people upgrade to a dedicated machine within a few weeks.

Option B: Cloud VPS ($5–20/month)

A Virtual Private Server from providers like DigitalOcean, Linode, or Hetzner runs OpenClaw in the cloud. The minimum spec is 2GB RAM and 1 vCPU, which costs $5–12/month. This gives you always-on operation without buying hardware, but you lose iMessage integration and local file access. Annual cost: $60–240.

Option C: Mini PC ($200–400 one-time)

A small Linux-based mini PC like an Intel NUC or Beelink runs OpenClaw well. It's a one-time purchase that gives you always-on operation and local file access, but without Apple integrations like iMessage. Good for users who don't need Apple-specific features.

Option D: Mac Mini ($600–800 one-time)

The Mac Mini M4 is the most popular choice. One-time cost of $600–800 for the base model. Silent, energy-efficient ($10–15/year in electricity), and gives you native iMessage, Calendar, and Reminders integration. This is what we recommend and what most of our clients use.

Component 2: AI Model API Cost

OpenClaw uses an AI model (like Claude or GPT-4) to think and make decisions. You pay for this through an API key, and the cost depends on how much you use the agent.

Light Usage: $20–30/month

A few messages per day, morning briefings, basic email monitoring. This covers most personal users who interact with their agent casually.

Moderate Usage: $30–80/month

Regular daily use, multiple email drafts, research tasks, scheduling, and client follow-up. This is where most solopreneurs and consultants land.

Heavy Usage: $80–150/month

High-volume email processing, constant messaging, complex research, multiple scheduled tasks running daily. Business deployments with multiple team members typically fall here.

These costs come directly from the AI provider (Anthropic for Claude, OpenAI for GPT-4). OpenClawGTA does not mark up or resell API access — you create your own API key and pay the provider directly.

Component 3: Setup Cost

Getting OpenClaw installed, configured, and secured is the biggest variable in total cost.

DIY Setup: $0

OpenClaw is open-source. If you're comfortable with terminal commands, configuration files, and basic networking, you can install it yourself for free. The risk is security misconfiguration — over 135,000 exposed installations were identified in 2026.

Personal Setup: $499 one-time

Our Personal Setup tier includes installation, security hardening, WhatsApp and email connection, SOUL.md configuration, and 2–3 core workflows. This is designed for individuals and solopreneurs who want it done right without the learning curve.

Business Setup: $2,500–4,500 one-time

Our Business tier includes everything in Personal plus multi-user configuration, CRM integration, custom workflow development, team training, and priority support. Designed for small businesses with 2–10 team members.

Full details on what each tier includes are on our pricing page.

Component 4: Ongoing Management

Self-Managed: $0/month

After setup, you manage your own agent. You handle updates, troubleshoot issues, and configure new workflows yourself. Most technically comfortable users choose this path.

Managed Service: $800/month

We monitor your agent, handle updates, configure new workflows on request, troubleshoot issues, and provide priority support. This is for businesses that want zero maintenance overhead. Think of it as a fractional AI operations team.

Total Cost Summary

Here's what typical setups cost in the first year and ongoing:

Profile Year 1 Total Monthly After Year 1
DIY on existing computer $240–600 (API only) $20–50
Personal + Mac Mini $1,339–1,699 (Mac Mini + setup + API) $20–50
Personal + VPS $619–979 (VPS + setup + API) $25–70
Business + Mac Mini + Managed $13,300–15,700 (Mac Mini + setup + API + managed) $880–950

For most solopreneurs, the sweet spot is Personal Setup on a Mac Mini: approximately $1,400 total to get started, then $20–50/month ongoing. Compare that to a virtual assistant at $1,500–4,000/month, and the ROI becomes clear within the first month.
